Acupuncture - for Health!

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture utilizes very fine needles inserted into specific points which stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms.  Generally painless with few side effects, acupuncture has been used worldwide, for thousands of years, to achieve overall wellbeing.  Acupuncture is one form of therapy used within a  comprehensive system of healing in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which also includes massage, dietary therapy, cupping, moxibustion and Chinese herbs.

In order to get the most benefit from your acupuncture treatment, a few considerations can be taken into account.
  • Be sure to eat within the last 4 hours prior to the treatment.  Heavy meals immediately before treatment may cause nausea, while an empty stomach may cause dizziness.
  • Bring a list of medications and supplements that you are taking.
  • Avoid wearing make up or perfume, especially on your first visit.
  • Avoid food and beverages that may change the colour of your tongue.
  • Do not drink alcohol prior to the visit.

After the acupuncture treatment:

  • Rest is preferable.  Make the day as relaxed as possible.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Avoid excessive eating, especially of refined foods.
  • Avoid strenuous activities.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a form of medicine with a 2500 year history.  It is completely different from Western Medicine and it uses acupuncture, herbs, massage and dietary therapy to treat illness.  It is a form of medicine that regards the individual as a whole, and works to restore the body’s natural balance to achieve optimum health – physically and mentally.  It is based in such theories as: The Principles of Yin-Yang, Taoism, and Confucianism.

Herbal Medicine

Acupuncture isn't the only modality in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Herbal teas, tinctures and powders are used instead of pharmaceutical drugs to stimulate change.  The medicinal properties of the herbs are bioavailable, meaning that the body can naturally break down and utilize their therapeutic properties rather than eliminating them.

All herbal perscriptions are customized for each person and not everyone will require herbal medicine treatment.  Herbs are available from Dr Le directly, which saves you the trouble of combing through Chinatown trying to find "Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan"  yourself!
